Notes:
- OpenVMS BACKUP improvements in V7.2: Performance improvements are in V7.2: tape writing completely overlapped with disk reading. Improvement in performance up to 40%
- BACKUP and Shadowing Enhancements:
- We will not be productizing Snapshot Services for OpenVMS. Instead, we will be delivering enhancements to Volume Shadowing and the BACKUP utility on OpenVMS. These enhancements will allow customers to do backups without shutting down the application and without a significant performance penalty.
- Specifically, we plan to do work in Volume Shadowing to improve the performance of re-integrating a disk into a split shadow set. The time needed to re-integrate the disk will be dependent on the amount of change that has occurred to the data while the disk was off-line, not the total size of the disk.
- In the BACKUP utility, we plan to add an online back-up so that a consistent copy of a disk can be made while the disk is still receiving writes from the application. For physical incremental backup, only the blocks that have actually changed will need to be backed up, instead of entire files as is done with today’s incremental backup.
- Extended File Cache (XFC) V1.0 (in Kestrel) will:
- Continue to provide write through caching (synchronous write) for high integrity and to be compatible with VIOC in a cluster
- Provide read ahead caching on sequential files
- Support for greater than 100 closed files in cache. Only limited by memory size.
- RMS Performance Enhancement: Global bucket locking will be reduced in RMS, saving millions of locks for applications that have a high ratio of reads to writes.
- Save Set Manager V1.4 (7/99) included: Support for ODS5, the current version already supports OVMS V7.2. We are also including bug fixes. We are looking at integrating SSM with ABS for a future release. Future releases will also support new OS versions, integrate with ABS, and contain bug fixes and new functionality as required.
- Disk File Optimizer V2.5 (7/99) included:
- EV6 support and bug fixes. The current version V2.4 (10/98), supported OVMS V7.2 and ODS5 except for a display field in the GUI. This will be fixed with the 2.5 release. Future releases will also support new OS versions as well as contain bug fixes and new functionality as required.
- Conmpaq RAID Software for OpenVMS V2.4A (11/99) will include:
- Support for OpenVMS V7.2. RAID doesn’t care about ODS5, not an issue. Future releases will also support new OS versions as well as contain bug fixes and new functionality as required. Future versions will include performance improvements and OS version support.
