*VBS Script Virus*
You may have the VBS/Loveletter.f virus:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_98622.htm
Follow these steps in the order given. (Robert Green)
1. http://virusall.com/downscan.html
From this page you can select an on-line anti-virus scan from one of
several sites (I recommend Symantec). Let the
scanner delete all infected files.
2. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/fixlove.exe
Download and run this tool. It will reverse changes to the registry
which the worm made, and will also surface your original
MP3 files (which were hidden by the worm).
3. http://claymania.com/zefrjpg.html
From this site download the zefrjpg.zip archive. Two executables and a
help file are included:
ZEFRJPG.EXE - use this program to recover JPG files destroyed by the
worm on Win9X/ME systems.
ZEFRJPG32.EXE - use this program to recover the JPGs on NT/2000/XP systems.
Expect recovery of 30% - 80% of your JPG files, dependent on several fators.
*VGA Mode - Do you have a problem with your Video? Always going in VGA MODE?
*
This happens to everyone at some point of time or other and is most
likely caused by some application or third party utility overwriting
your drivers files (or if you do not have had a right video driver to
begin with). (Reference )
To verify exactly what gets loaded, follow these steps. Open registry by
going to START-RUN and entering regedit. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\hardware\DeviceMap\Video . In this value of
Device\Video0 points to a registry key that has the location of the
video driver that Windows is configured to load. for example:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ videodriver
\Device0 . Navigate to this key. Check value of
"InstalledDisplayDrivers" . Its value indicates whether driver was
loaded or not. If the setting shows another registry location, a
third-party driver may be getting loaded. Check out Microsoft
Knowledgebase article for more details:

By using Virtual PC for Windows, users can upgrade to a new operating
system and continue to run legacy applications that are incompatible
with the new operating system. More information here

*Volume Control* - The volume icon does not appear in the notification
area (system tray)
Make sure Hide Inactive is disabled in Taskbar Properties. In Sound and
Audio Devices Properties, make sure "Place volume icon in the taskbar"
is checked. If it still doesn't work, here are two workarounds:
1. Go to Start/Log off (log off then log back on).
2. Right-click the taskbar & select Task Manager under Processes tab
select Explorer.Exe & End Task. Under Applications tab select New
Task, type in "explorer" and click OK.
*Volume Control - Error Message*
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the
Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the
Windows XP compact disc to the system_root \System32 folder on your
computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:
*
*Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to
prevent it from starting automatically. Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd , and then click OK.
Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after
each line, where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and
system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files
are located (generally C:\Windows): *
*CD-ROM drive:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root \system32\sndvol32.exe
For example, if your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive E, and the folder
that contains the Windows system files is C:\Windows, type the following
lines at the command prompt (pressing ENTER after each line):
e:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
Type exit to quit the command prompt.
Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is
displayed in the notification area of the taskbar (if you selected this
option).
