IMAGECNT 1.5
IMAGECNT takes trace of real usage of known images (images explicitly
installed with INSTALL utility) on your OpenVMS system, since last
bootstrap.
Using it on a regular basis, you can know exactly WHAT images are used
and what are not; for each shared image, you can know if it's used
enough, or if installing it /shared is only a waste of memory.
3 parameters are allowed:
P1 - output file name
P2 - option. "NOASK" for non-interactive mode.
Default: interactive mode.
P3 - minimum system uptime (days).
Default: no minimum uptime.
You can use IMAGECNT.COM interactively or (better) in a
non-interactive mode.
INTERACTIVE MODE
Some valid example:
@IMAGECNT ! output occurs on sys$output
@IMAGECNT output-file ! output occurs on 'output-file'
When used in interactive mode, Imagecnt also asks if you want a SORTED
or UNSORTED output (based on the "used" counter field).
NON-INTERACTIVE MODE
@IMAGECNT output-file "NOASK" ! output on outpu-file, SORTED
@IMAGECNT output-file "NOASK" 3 ! the same, but no action if system
! uptime is less of 3 days
When used in non-interactive mode, you MUST give an output file name.
Anyway you can use something like: @IMAGECNT TT: "NOASK" to get output
on your screen (doesn't work in batch queues of course).
Output is ALWAYS sorted.
Execution is always with "SET NOVERIFY" on (useful when running into
batch queues).
TYPICAL USE
My "typical" use of IMAGECNT is into SYSHUTDOWN.COM: executing it at
every shutdown and recording results in a proper file, I have a
complete log of images utilization. So I can find useful information,
e.g. when I wonder if a given software product is really used by my
users or not. (If I've proofs that a product is never used... I
uninstall it :)
For example you can include this command into your Syshutdown:
@[...wherever_imagecnt.com_is...]IMAGECNT IMAGEUSE.DAT "NOASK" 3
and you'll get a new IMAGEUSE.DAT file at every shutdown - if system
uptime is less than 3 days, no operation occurs. You should manage
IMAGEUSE.DAT files.
Or you can get my "RUN_IMAGECNT.COM" to run IMAGECNT outputting
results into better file name (YYMMDD_nodename_NN.DAT).
For more information you can write directly to the me; this software
is FREE, but of course any donation would be accepted... :)
