A general purpose unix-like pipe for VMS can be found at rigel.efd.lth.se 
that lets the output to sys$output be piped through a sort filter. This
could be used to sort the directory listing. 

It has numerous other uses such as GREP, output re-direction, etc...

A real handy utility that I find endless uses for.
