We are using a CMD CQD-263/TM for our EXabyte 8500 (I forget the rev#) on our VAX 4000-300 which allows toggling between 8200- and 8500-mode with the INITI/DENSI= switch. /DENSI=1600 ==> 8200-mode, /DENSI=8500 ==> 8500-mode. If you also have a third-party controller, you might want to check with them to see if they have an option for you. (btw, the Exabyte on the CMD controller emulates a TU81.) Chip Tewksbury.
