From ncr-sd!hp-sdd!ucsdhub!sdcsvax!ames!hao!oddjob!gargoyle!ihnp4!laidbak!spl1!root Fri Dec 25 23:55:44 PST 1987 We would like to let all you netlanders know that site spl1 is available to provide high speed news feeds and mail links to all eligable organizations *WITH* *NO* *ADMINISTRATION* *OR* *SERVICE* *CHAREGES* spl1 is located in downtown Chicago and now has 4 USR Courrier HST's, 2 TELEBIT TRAILBLAZERS, and a gaggle of vanilla 2400BPS modems online on our news/mail engine machine to support feeds. The site is accessable through PC Persuit and operates 24 Hours/Day 7 Days/Week, dedicated to news and mail. If there any sites which are interested in switching their feed to a high speed DDD/ (your) Out WATS site, we would be happy to accept new users (again, no fees involved). Sound too good to be true? It's not. spl1 is now feeding sites like Arthur Anderson's Corporate Offices, AT&T's National Tech Support Center, Beatrice Foods' Corporate Offices, Reuter's Rich Inc, and others. We've been up continuously for 60 days (knock on wood, a good indicator of reliability) and haven't yet missed a feed for our sites. We are also now hosting the new moderator for comp.binaries.ibm.pc Qualification for connection to our site is a function of the number of news readers your site supports and your willingness to offer downstream feeds. We want to help extend and support USENET, helping a good thing get better. Robert A. About a month ago we posted an offering for free feeds to any organization with a reasonable readership and ability to refeed to other, new nodes. This offer is still open. However, the real reason for this posting to to comment on how impressed I am with the Trailblazer modems. We have both Trailblazers and HST's at spl1 and have recently begun to start feeding sites with them. The performance numbers are terrific. On our trailblazers (not enough traffic on the HST's yet) we get about 1100CPS on compressed batch feeds, even to simple old 386 XENIX machines! Yes, a full feed out in less than 45 mins!! Even on a micro! Well, I'm sold on these high speed units, and hope the net continues to upgrade. The possibilities for faster email service, feeds and lower phone costs are terrific! Robert A.
