I think you too have an interest in this service. -Taxi (Takao shimono%tkov58.DEC@decwrl.DEC.COM) --- Forwarded to Info-Nets with Russ's permission. ====================================================================== A CAPSULE DESCRIPTION OF THE DASnet NETWORK Our software packages implement a network of IBM PCs via phone lines, packet switchers, and other RS-232 type connections (e.g. direct connect). If you receive the newspaper NETWORK WORLD, you will see a good description of this aspect of the Network in the Jan 5 issue, page 27. We also have a substantial body of software designed to implement communications without manual intervention. We have used this aspect of the software in order to implement a number of links between hosts, networks, computer conference systems, and other like services. We have just completed a link to a conference system in Japan which should make electronic mail between Japan and the rest of the world (primarily North America, Canada, and Europe) much easier and less expensive to communicate with. DASnet Members (who use our software on their PCs) and DASnet Subscribers (who connect to DASnet via some other network or service) may exchange electronic mail--and in some cases files--with anyone on the services to whom we link. People on those services who are not subscribers may exchange electronic mail with DASnet Members and Subscribers only. For example: A DASnet Subscriber on UUCP may address anyone on CompuServe and BITNET. A person on UUCP who is not a Subscriber may only address DASnet Members and Subscribers. (The Member or Subscriber whom they address pays the bill for that communication.) WHAT DOES A SUBSCRIPTION TO THE DASnet NETWORK COST? NETWORKS/SERVICES LINKED BY THE DASnet NETWORK A Subscription costs only only $4.50/month. In addition to the Subscription, there are charges for the actual communications, and these are listed below. The charges listed cover our cost to provide you the service--for example downloading your mail from CompuServe. The charges listed also include any long-distance or packet switch charges that your message uses--for example, if you exchange mail with one of our Members in Canada, you would find charges for using a packet-switch or telephone between our San Jose Hub and the Hub in Ottawa Canada. Charges are as follows: Service: Per Message: Per 1k bytes in message: ARPANET $.25 $.17 BITNET .25 .17 CompuServe .25 .17 EIES .25 .17 EasyLink .25 .17 GEnie .15 .08 MCI (out to MCI) .35 .25 (in from MCI) .10 .10 (Paper mail - USA) 2.00 .20 The Source .25 .17 Stanford University .10 .05 Santa Clara University .10 .05 Telex to: Western Union Telex in U.S. .15 1.50 Other Telex in U.S. (e.g.ITT) .15 2.80 Canada or Mexico* .15 2.80 United Kingdom* .15 3.30 Brazil* .15 5.60 Examples of Worldwide Telex. TWICS (Japan) .40 .25 Unison .15 .08 UUCP (Unix systems) .10 .05 We also offer the following services exclusively to DASnet Members and Subscribers. - Telex Service. Your own Telex number with unique answerback; your own EasyLink mailbox; messages sent and delivered through the DASnet Network just like the rest of your electronic mail. CHARGES: US$8.00/month Western Union's charge for Telex Activity and 10% surcharge - BIX Service; CompuServe Service. If you also belong to these conference systems, activity to and from your mailbox and conferences may be done through DASnet. (All operation is automatic, saving you up to 95% of your normal bill.) CHARGES: US$6.50/month INVOICING You must establish an account with us to cover the communication costs. You do that by sending us a refundable deposit of $20 (min). We will send you an invoice each month via the Network with the communication costs for that month. You can pay as often as you wish, but you must not let the account become zero. At that point we will cut your account off until you re-establish a positive amount in your account. The Network will send you a reminder memo when the account is near zero. If you pay each month, this should not be a problem. The access fee of $4.50 per month will be added to your monthly invoice. To open your account costs only $33.50, which is a $20 deposit and a 3-month subscription. All dollar amounts are subject to change and are in US dollars. WHAT DO YOU GET? For your $4.50 per month you get the following: - A subscription to the DASnet Network, which allows you to exchange electronic mail with DASnet Members and Subscribers PLUS any other user of the services we link to. (This is a maximum of 1/2 hour PER DAY of communication time at our computer. Other arrangements can be made.) - A free listing in the DASnet Network Directory, which lists our Members and Subscribers. It also gives the rules for addressing mail to people who are not Subscribers, but who may be reached through the services that we link. - The DASnet Conference System. - Access to other DASnet Services, e.g. Telex, BIX, and CompuServe Services described above. - A free copy of the DASnet Network Directory. HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE DASnet NETWORK 1. Send us your check for $33.50. That covers 3 months service and $20 deposit. THE CHECK MUST BE IN US FUNDS. Mail the check to: DA Systems, Inc. ATTN: Order Desk 1503 E. Campbell Ave. Campbell, CA 95008 2. Send by electronic mail your name, address, and phone number so we can include you in the next edition of the Network Directory. - If your entry is under your name, this is all that we need. - If the directory entry is under a company name, please include your title or function if you want them listed in the directory. In either case, you may have two people under your listing, e.g. the Sales Manager, your spouse. You may also want to have additional entries in the Network Directory; e.g. under an organization in which you are active, as an individual (if your main listing is under a company), under your professional name if it is different (e.g. your maiden or married name, a pen name). Check with us for costs on these extra entries. 3. When we receive your check we will reply via electronic mail with your Network address (computer name and username) and we will mail your copy of the DASnet Directory to you.
